Edinburgh Postnatal
Depression Scale (EPDS):
A Professional Screening Tool

Postnatal wellbeing is often discussed in general terms, yet individual experiences can be far more nuanced. This is where structured tools such as the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) become relevant.

The EPDS is a short questionnaire designed to reflect emotional experiences over a recent period. It focuses on patterns in mood, perception, and day-to-day emotional responses.

Rather than offering conclusions, it highlights areas that may benefit from further reflection.

Structure can be particularly helpful when experiences feel unclear. Open-ended questions can feel overwhelming, whereas a structured format breaks complex feelings into smaller, more manageable prompts. For some, this makes engagement easier.

It is important to understand that the EPDS does not stand alone. It exists within a broader context of discussion and interpretation. Its role is to highlight, not define.

As awareness around postnatal wellbeing continues to grow, tools like the EPDS are becoming part of a wider shift towards earlier recognition. They are not solutions in themselves, but they contribute to a more reflective approach to understanding emotional experiences.

The value of the EPDS lies not in certainty, but in the space it creates for awareness.
