How Do Airport Security Systems Affect ICDs?

 

Travelling with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator often raises questions about airport security procedures. 

Modern airport screening systems are generally safe for individuals with ICDs. However, some equipment uses electromagnetic fields, which can interact with sensitive medical devices under certain conditions. 

Walk-through metal detectors may detect the metal within the device, but passing through them at a normal pace does not usually cause issues. Full-body scanners are considered safe, as they use technology that does not interfere with device function. 

The main consideration is avoiding prolonged exposure to strong magnetic fields. This can occur if a hand-held wand is held directly over the device site for an extended period. 

Carrying a device identification card and informing security staff can help ensure appropriate screening methods are used. 

Overall, the process remains safe when approached with awareness and communication.
