Can An ICD Battery Really Last For More Than 10 Years?

 

Many people are surprised to learn how long modern Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator batteries actually last.

Most ICDs continue functioning reliably for between 6 and 10 years, while some newer devices can now approach 12 or 13 years before replacement becomes necessary.

The exact lifespan depends largely on how much work the device performs each day.

What Uses Battery Power In An ICD?

An ICD continuously monitors the heart rhythm and delivers treatment when dangerous arrhythmias occur.

Several factors influence how quickly battery power is used:

  • Frequency of life saving shocks

  • Anti Tachycardia Pacing activity

  • Pacemaker support requirements

  • Device complexity

  • Number of leads powered

Single chamber ICDs generally last longer because they require less energy than more advanced dual chamber or CRT-D systems.

How Battery Levels Are Monitored

One of the most reassuring parts of ICD care is that the battery is monitored closely during NHS follow up appointments.

Specialised programmers assess remaining battery life and can usually predict replacement timing months in advance.

Many patients also use remote monitoring systems at home, allowing the hospital to receive automatic updates overnight.

Modern devices often provide alerts such as vibrations or audible beeping when the battery reaches the Elective Replacement Indicator stage.

What Happens During A Generator Change?

When replacement becomes necessary, patients usually undergo a generator change procedure.

This is often much simpler than the original implantation because the leads inside the heart usually remain in place.

The old generator is removed through a small incision over the existing scar and connected to a new device.

Most procedures are completed under local anaesthetic as a day case.

The device continues quietly monitoring the heart year after year while ordinary routines continue around it.
